Shannon Slatky, Gillett School District kindergarten teacher, received the Richard T. Lowery Educator of Excellence Award for the 2023-24 school year.
The recipient is selected by the teaching staff of the Gillett School District, and the Nicolet Oconto Retired Teacher Association presents the award to the winner. Slatky received the award June 6.
Slatky graduated from University of Wisconsin-River Falls in 2001 with a major in elementary education and a minor in early childhood education. She received her master’s degree from Viterbo University in 2004.
Slatky began teaching at Gillett Elementary School in August 2001 and has just completed her 23rd year of teaching. She has taught second through fourth grades but is is currently teaching kindergarten.
“Seeing the growth and change in students from the beginning of the year until the end is my favorite thing about teaching, along with the hugs,” Slatky said.
In addition to teaching, Slatky is an adviser for the National Honor Society and is the coach for the middle school basketball and track.
She has been married to her husband, Kevin, for 20 years. They have two sons, Tyler and Brandon.
