The Oconto Falls Park and Recreation Committee is not giving up on East Side Beach.
The city has been coping with a social media outcry since it passed the 2024 budget with a note that there would be no lifeguards at the beach this summer, mainly because of ongoing staffing shortages, and the popular swimming raft will probably not be launched because of the need for costly repairs.
Officials announced last week that they are preparing a grant application for a project of up to $175,000 and are seeking residents’ input on what recreation improvements would like to see at city parks or beaches. Examples include playground improvements and bathroom upgrades.
Ideas can be sent by Feb. 23 to info@ci.ocontofalls.wi.us or mail to City of Oconto Falls, Attention Park and Rec, P.O. Box 70, Oconto Falls, WI 54154. Ideas can also be dropped at City Hall. The committee plans to discuss and review ideas when it meets in March.
The city also continues to seek staffing help at Eastside Beach for the summer of 2024. After the January city council meeting, the city posted openings to serve as seasonal beach supervisor, head lifeguard and lifeguards. Lifeguards must be 15 and have current lifeguard certification.
