Five musicians will share the music that inspires them Jan. 19 at the 12th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day community celebration at First Presbyterian Church in Shawano.
The program featuring Pasquale Cervantez, Wade Fernandez, Skip Jones, Clint Miller and Dorothy Zerbe begins at 5:30 p.m.
Through the music and presentations, the program will honor the remarkable life of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and his legacy of fighting for racial equality, human rights, economic justice and peace.
Cervantez grew up in Mexico and now lives and works in Shawano. Every day, music fills his life and he shares this gift with those around him.
Soaring from Menominee Indian Reservation roots, Fernandez knows how to both soothe and rock. Award-winning vocals, guitar, songwriting, native flute and drumming are incorporated in his music. Fernandez tours internationally and teaches as he goes.
For over 20 years, Jones has worked to bring people together around music. He has organized and directed festivals and concert series, introduced house concerts to the Midwest and beyond, provided high quality sound engineering for folk festivals and cultural events, and produced and recorded albums for local, regional and national artists.
Miller combines his music with his art. With the use of vibrant colors, he is inspired by the likes of Joseph Campbell and creates his album covers using water color pencils and mixed media with a modern twist on Native art and symbolism. With 10 albums under his belt, Miller continues to create unique music that cannot be confined to one category or genre.
Zerbe has always loved to write. Her influences include nature, family, animals, love, life changes and emotions of every color. She performs in coffeehouses, house concerts, festivals, churches, parks, yoga classes and private parties. Her training includes a lifetime of classical and sacred/spiritual in piano and voice, with a great big dose of folk from the ’60s and ’70s to influence her guitar. With a particular passion for working with children, she has directed numerous young theatre and music productions in church and community settings, frequently contributing her own writing to the projects.
Dinner will be served following the program. Reservations are not required. Donations will be accepted.
