Michael “Mike” Buettner, a native and longtime resident of northern Wisconsin, lost his three-year courageous battle with ALS on March 20, 2015. He was born in Shawano on Sept. 27, 1960, son of Wayne and Sandra (Brunner) Buettner, of Gresham.
Michael graduated from Antigo High School in 1979. He earned his bachelor’s degree in fisheries biology and his master’s degree in natural resources from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. His professional career spanned 25 years in the fields of environmental chemistry and water resources. He had been the director of water utilities for the city of Appleton from 2003- 2010. He then relocated to Grand Prairie, Texas, to assume the position of assistant director of water utilities for the city of Arlington, Texas, where he served until his medical retirement in 2014.
Survivors include his beloved wife and devoted caregiver, Jackie (Kadlec); his parents, Wayne and Sandra Buettner; and his Texas family, including his daughter, Samantha Buettner; stepdaughters, Amanda (Melahd) Kohan and Samantha Kadlec; two grandchildren, Ayden Kohan and Kain Arenas; brother, David (Nina) Bittner; special niece, Ren, of Fairplay, Colorado; and his many lifelong friends from his childhood home in Antigo. He will be especially missed by his aunts, uncles and cousins, who live throughout the United States.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Rolly and Barbara Brunner; paternal grandparents, Clifford and Selma Buettner; and uncle, Kurt Buettner.
Michael relished the Buettner passion for musky fishing. His favorite fishing spots were the area lakes in Boulder Junction and The Turtle Flambeau Flowage. And of course, he was an avid Green Bay Packers fan.
A memorial Mass will be held April 11, 2015, at 11 a.m. at St. Francis Solanus Catholic Church in Gresham.
