Melvin George Sovinski, May 27, 1926-July 6, 2014.
Never without an appointment notebook in his breast pocket and a carpenter’s ruler in his pant pocket, Melvin was a man who fulfilled many roles in his 88 years. He was first a son and brother, then a student attending 13 elementary schools before finalizing his days at Suring High School.
He served in Korea before working for Milwaukee Foundry and then became a union carpenter. Other jobs included being a mechanic at the Suring Co-op, postal worker at the Suring Post Office and sales representative for Farmers Insurance until his retirement in 1997.
Melvin was active in Ducks Unlimited, the VFW, Suring Volunteer Fire Department and especially, his faith. He was an active member of Mount Olive Lutheran Church and later St. John Lutheran Church in Townsend. He served on a number of insurance, church and local business boards.
Melvin loved a good hat. He always sported a fedora when they were in style, and in recent years his go-to hat was a baseball hat monogrammed with Ducks Unlimited. But, in between, many unsightly hats were just for fishing. An avid fisherman, always angling when his health allowed, he enjoyed fishing for the big ones and the thrill of the pan fish frenzy at spawn time.
Family always was of the most importance. Melvin married Mae Schmidt in 1949 and was father to Julie (Terry) Feltz, of Hatley, Wayne (Mary Lou) Sovinski, of Hartford, and Candace Sovinski, of Madison. He was the proud grandfather of Kelly Osinga Feltz, Mitchell Feltz, Greg Sovinski and Brad Sovinski. Mel also enjoyed three great-grandchildren, Bella Osinga, Sophia Osinga and Alyce Feltz.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Max and Ella Sovinski, as well as all of his siblings, Harvey, Ruth, Julius, Doris and Jerry. Mae, his wife of 57 years, passed away in 2006.
Visitation was held at St. John Lutheran Church in Townsend on Friday, July 11, from 10 a.m. until the funeral service at 11:30 a.m. with Pastor Stephen Mueller officiating. Melvin was laid to rest in Mount Olive Lutheran Cemetery in Suring.
