Logging museum ready for another summer

The Holt and Balcom Logging Camp Museum in Lakewood will again be welcoming guests this summer.

Free guided tours are available from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. every Saturday from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

Operated by Holt Lumber Company from 1881 to 1927, the camp is listed on the national historic register. This is the oldest logging camp in America sitting exactly where it was built.

The site authentically depicts lumberjack life during the Big Pine Era. The camp is handicap-accessible and recommended for ages 10 and older.

Holt and Balcom is located in northern Oconto County off County Road F, 1 1/2 miles east of Lakewood. Visitors can turn right into the McCauslin Golf Course and Country Club and then follow the signs. Park in the golf course lot; the museum is directly behind the clubhouse.

Admission is free, but donations to cover the cost of camp maintenance are appreciated. For private tours, call 715-276-3505 or email kathiemarsh@outlook.com.
