The Oconto Falls Lions last week were granted permission to develop their plan to record and broadcast online a view of the Oconto River.
The Oconto Falls City Council on April 8 requested the Lions return when plans to install a webcam at a location near the East Side Beach are finalized.
Lions representative Dave Polashek told council members the Lions considered running a contest to guess the day and time the club’s final fish crib, a structure that provides fish habitat, fell through the ice and into the river. The webcam would’ve recorded the event.
“As we started talking about it, we thought this would be a great tourism idea to have a webcam out there permanently,” Polashek said. “In looking at that area, it’s one of the most beautiful areas on the river.”
The Lions club is working with Nsight and Packerland Broadband to make the webcam a year-round service. Polashek said the video could be shown on the websites of the Lions club, the city of Oconto Falls and the Oconto Falls Area Chamber of Commerce.
Alderman Kevin Rusch asked what the focus would be, saying he didn’t want to focus on kids playing on the beach or other images that could be viewed “for the wrong reason.”
Polashek said the camera would capture a broad image focusing on the open water. Although the specifics haven’t been finalized, mounting a camera on the shelter at the beach is one possibility.
