Plans to build a new Shawano County Public Library on its current site could see a slight expansion if officials can negotiate the purchase of a few adjoining properties.
Kurt Berner, of The Samuels Group, said he recently spoke with people connected with the Frontier and the Bertram Wireless buildings south of the library, 128 S. Sawyer St., Shawano.
There is no projected cost or date of construction for a new library, and officials have yet to even approve a conceptual plan.
As for the Frontier building at 215 E. Division St., Berner said he was told the building serves as a hub of connections for Shawano and the surrounding area.
“Taking down and replacing that building is kind of a monumental feat, so it’s hands-off for the building, but the garage that’s on the north side of that building is something they may consider,” he said.
Possibilities are better with the Bertram Wireless building at 221 E. Division St.
Berner said this building is mostly used for storage, with equipment in place on the tower. However, company officials will review their options, which means it’s still on the table for the county.
In early September, the owner of the two apartment buildings at 203 and 205 E. Division St., put the properties on the market for $975,000.
The two buildings include 12 units.
Berner said he reached out to the Realtor, who agreed to talk with the owner about the county possibly buying the property.
