The 11th annual Fishing for Fun Day was held June 6 at Camp U-Nah-Li-Ya on Chute Pond. The Oconto County University of Wisconsin-Extension Parenting Resource Center, along with many volunteers, hosted and sponsored the event.
About 135 participants took advantage of the good fishing day.
The event encourages kids and men to have fun together and create a bond. Research shows that children with active adult male role models receive benefits that children without involved fathers do not receive. Some of the benefits are good grades, positive problem-solving skills, good health, close friendships, compassion and empathy.
Children received a fishing pole to encourage more fishing outings with their dad or adult male role model. Each child also had the opportunity to paint a Fishing for Fun hat or T-shirt to remember their special day of fishing.
The following sponsors made the event possible: YMCA Camp U-Nah-Li-Ya, Oconto River Watershed Chapter of Trout Unlimited, Red Squirrel’s Sportsmen, Breed Sportsman Club, Suring Sportsmen Club, Cabela’s Green Bay store, Mills Fleet Farm, Saputo Cheese Corp. and Wichman’s BP station.
