William “Bill” Montgomery, 83, Oconto Falls, died Saturday afternoon, May 17, 2014, at Community Memorial Hospital. He was born March 11, 1931, in southwestern Wisconsin to Dallas and Lucille (Sugden) Montgomery.
Bill grew up in the area where he graduated from Richland Center High School with the Class of 1950. As a young man, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1954 until 1957.
On April 6, 1957, he married Louise Shaffer in Muscoda. Soon after their marriage, the couple moved to the town of Morgan, where they owned and operated a family farm. Bill drove cattle truck and also worked at the Green Valley Elevator. He served on the Morgan Town Board for 23 years, the Town of Morgan Cemetery Board and as a volunteer fireman for the Green Valley-Morgan Fire Department since 1960.
Bill was a longtime member of Tabor United Methodist Church in Gillett and the Gillett VFW Post 8314. Since retiring, Bill enjoyed golfing, camping, fishing and spending time at the recycling center, handing out Tootsie Rolls to the kids.
Survivors are his wife of 57 years, Louise Montgomery, Morgan; their four children, Lucy Montgomery, Clintonville, Beth (Keith) Montgomery-Snearly, Big Bend, Bill (Kim) Montgomery, Juneau, and Mary (Chris) Zillmer, Malone; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; one brother, Delbert (Beverly) Montgomery, Edgerton; one sister, Rosemary (John) Kidd, Richland Center.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Wilma Ray, and one grandson, Dan Sonkowsky.
Visitation with the urn present will be held from 4-8 p.m. Friday, May 23, at Jones Funeral Service in Oconto Falls. Visitation will continue after 9 a.m. Saturday, May 24, at Tabor United Methodist Church in Gillett until the time of the service. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the church with the Rev. Gerhardt Miller and the Rev. Young Choe officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in the town of Morgan Cemetery.
In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, memorials may be made to Tabor United Methodist Church in Gillett.
