Marion Invitational
Tigerton High School played in their first volleyball matches of the season Aug. 29 at the Marion Invitational.
Except for the first match of the night, the Tigers kept the sets close and exciting.
The Tigers lost their first match to Menominee Nation with identical set scores of 25-10. Menominee Nation also beat Tigerton 2-0.
Tigerton then defeated Phelps 2-1 with set scores of 25-22, 25-27 and 15-12. Elcho defeated Tigerton 2-0 with set scores of 25-19 and 26-24. Tigerton beat Faith Christian Academy in the fourth round 2-0 with set scores of 25-17 and 25-17.
In the final match of the evening, Tigerton defeated Marion 2-1 with set scores of 15-25, 25-16 and 15-13.
“Tonight was our first chance to play together in competition,” Tigerton coach Holly Meverden said. “The girls will work hard, and we will figure out how to make it work in many areas as needed. I see so much potential on the floor and am sure that I will see improvement.”
For the tournament, Danika Tiller led Tigerton with 47 assists.
Angel Welch collected 43 digs, with Aaliyah Lederhaus having 24, Jade Selle and Lillian Welch with 20 each and Sienna Breaker getting 18.
Presley Stewart-Rolfs scored 21 kills, while Lederhaus had 15, Selle had 14 and Lillian Welch with 12.
Stewart-Rolfs notched 41 points and 17 aces, Breaker had 34 points and seven aces, and Tiller had 19 points and four aces.
Lederhaus led the team with three block kills.
Crivitz Triangular
Suring downed Oneida Nation 3-0 and then lost 4-0 to Crivitz at the latter’s home triangular.
Against Crivitz, Suring was defeated 25-19, 25-22, 25-14, 3-0.
Wausaukee 3, Gillett 2
Gillett dropped to 2-2 on the year with a 3-2 loss to Wausaukee at home.
Aug. 27
Winneconne Quad Invitational
Shawano finished runner-up at the Winneconne Quad Invitational in their first matches of the season Aug. 27.
The Hawks dropped their match against their hosts 18-25, 25-22, 13-15. However, Shawano came back and defeated Denmark 25-17, 25-16, and then topped Wautoma in three sets 11-25, 25-15, 15-10.
“The night had many ups and downs as we learned our rotations and positions, but overall, it was a successful night,” coach Dan Trudgeon said. “We played Winneconne first and the final set came down to the wire with Winneconne coming out on top 13-15. It was a night to learn from after only three practices as a team this season.”
The Hawks were led by Leah Nordin and Natalie Bystol with 24 and 21 kills, respectively. Both led the team with five aces as well. Teagen Thompson led the team in digs with 25, and Amelia Klement led the offense with 35 assists.
SPASH Tournament
Wittenberg-Birnamwood opened its season in tournament action at Stevens Point Area Senior High School, finishing 3-1 in the process.
“It was a good start to the season by finishing first in the Silver Bracket,” coach Becky Rew said. “The girls played hard, fought back in a couple matches and ended the day 3-1. We started a little slow in our first match but turned it around quickly to win the next three games.”
The highlight of the day was when the girls fought back from a deficit against Green Bay NEW Lutheran to win the second and third sets and take the match.
The Chargers lost 1-2 to De Pere with set scores of 14-25, 25-17, 8-15; beat Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln 2-0 by scores of 25-18, 25-14; defeated Green Bay NEW Lutheran 2-1 on scores of 18-25, 25-22, 15-13; and downed Rhinelander 2-0 by set scores of 25-13, 25-23.
Kaitlin Tuskowski posted 52 serving attempts with eight aces and 17 assists; Makayla Meronk had 22 serving attempts with five aces and 30 digs; and Lily Metropulos recorded 23 serving attempts with five aces and 36 hitting attempts with 10 kills, 30 assists and 27 digs.
Melaina Granquist recorded 52 hitting attempts with 14 kills and six block kills. Charlie Eichman had 38 hitting attempts with 11 kills and five block kills, and Evelyn Fletcher had 34 hitting attempts with 10 kills.
Gresham 3, Three Lakes 2
Gresham won three sets against Three Lakes to improve to 1-1 on the year.
Gillett Quad
Gillett went 2-1 at its home quad with wins over Stockbridge and White Lake and a loss to Sevastopol.
Both wins were 3-0 shutouts, while the loss was also a 3-0 shutout in favor of Sevastopol.
Battle of the Valley
Oconto Falls lost 2-1 to Fox Valley Lutheran in their opening contest at the Battle of the Valley in Ashwaubenon. However, the Panthers came back and shut out Little Chute 2-0 to end their day.
Shiocton Invite
Suring lost 2-0 to Shiocton at the Shiocton Invite.
Oconto Invite
Menominee Nation was shut out 2-0 by both Oconto and Bonduel at the Oconto Invite.
The Bears started out with a win over Menominee Nation 25-11, 25-14.
Bonduel then lost to Valders in three sets after winning the first set 25-22, 22-25, 12-15.
It took two sets for the Bears to defeat Mishicot 25-19, 25-17.
Bonduel lost its last match in three sets against the host Oconto after winning the first set. 25-20, 21-25, 11-15. Oconto went on to win their invite.
Bonduel was lead by Audrey Weier who tallied 28 kills and 29 digs. Other strong contributors were Juliana Jacobs with 19 kills and Audrey Jacobs with 13 kills. Josie Anvelink led in digs with 31. Tatum Sporisky tallied 29 digs and seven aces. Paige Niquette had 40 assists. And Jayla Reinke had 28 assists.
