Melissa Trepanier, a 15-year veteran of the Suring School Board, submitted her letter of resignation on Wednesday. She had represented the town of Breed since 1999.
“After 15 years, I can no longer support the lack of concern and leadership by the School Board members for the important issues that affect our students and staff,” she wrote in her resignation letter.
In a phone interview Monday, Trepanier said she did not agree with the direction taken by some of the board members.
“I just felt that what was important to some board members isn’t good for the staff,” she said.
There wasn’t a particular decision she could name, but Trepanier said she felt it was best to resign.
“When my heart wasn’t in it any more, I knew it was time,” she said.
Trepanier did not attend Wednesday’s School Board meeting.
School Board members reviewed her letter of resignation in closed session but did not act on it in open session because it was not included on the meeting’s agenda. According to Superintendent Robert Ray, the board is scheduled to approve the resignation on July 9.
Trepanier said she was motivated to run for office to be involved in her two daughters’ education. She was elected to the board when her oldest daughter was in kindergarten, and now she is a senior in college. Her younger daughter is a junior in college.
“Being a small district, I felt it was important to be involved, and the only way to be part of the solution is to be involved,” she said.
Employed as an assistant bookkeeper in the Bonduel School District, Trepanier shared her knowledge of day-to-day operations at a school with the Suring School Board.
“She was a valuable board member,” Ray said. “With her working in a school district, she had a first-hand knowledge of how schools operate. She will be missed on the board.”
Trepanier said she enjoyed being a part of all the changes happening in education since 1999. The closure of Mountain School was one of the biggest changes for the district, she said.
“It was a scary transition, but it went really well,” she said.
Ray said the board will appoint someone to fill the remainder of the term, which expires in April 2015. Breed residents interested in the position should contact the district office at 920-842-2178, ext. 221, for an application.
