Ryne Scopp defended his overall championship for the second straight year Saturday as the Scopp family claimed three titles at the Kelly Lake Triathlon.
The 22-year-old Kenosha resident clocked in at 1 hour, 10 minutes, 52 seconds, eight minutes ahead of runner-up Nick Schmidt, of Menasha, and two minutes faster than Scopp’s winning time last year.
Scopp has posted the best time three times in the five-year history of the triathlon.
Scopp’s 15-year-old brother, Ben, was the top finisher in his age group (15-19) in 1:35:36, and his 17-year-old sister, Mady, posted the best time in her division (15-19) for the second straight year, finishing in 1:45:07.
Susan Fischer, of Madison, captured the female overall championship, completing the course in 1:29:18 and outpacing last year’s winner, Lace Leudke, of Madison, by 39 seconds.
Ann Senn, 44, of Oconto Falls, placed sixth among 46 female competitors, finishing in 1:39:26, and second in her age group (40-49).
The course included a 750-meter swim on Kelly Lake, 15 1/2-mile bicycle ride and 5-kilometer run. Organizer Roger Bloom said other triathlons are typically in the 400-meter range.
About 150 people participated, Bloom said, and proceeds, which will be donated to Shriners Hospitals-Chicago, are expected to total about $1,000.
