Despite the cold temperatures, the atmosphere inside the Oconto Falls High School Commons was warm and welcoming Jan. 13 as more than 40 area veterans were honored.
Eighteen students from the Oconto Falls High School Conflicts and Crises in History class shared their research projects with area veterans by hosting a reception after school. The students visited with their guests and learned more about the experiences of the veterans who served in various wars and conflicts, including the Korean War, Vietnam War, various Cold War postings and assignments, and the Gulf Wars, including Iraq and Kuwait.
Research topics were wide ranging and included Korean War history and major battles, selections from the Vietnam War era, and more recent conflicts and foreign policy challenges: Operation Iraqi Freedom, the Taliban, ISIS and the current Syrian War.
Those gathered were treated to a musical selection by students Leah Wons and Ashley Baeten, who sang the national anthem as a duet. Students joined their guests at festively decorated dining tables for a lasagna dinner prepared and served by Taher Food Service.
This marks the 14th year of the event hosted by students of the popular senior elective course. Many veterans have returned each year to meet with students and share their service-related histories, and enjoy the friendship and camaraderie of commonly shared experiences.
