The Shawano County University of Wisconsin-Extension office will expand its Strong Bones Strength Training program this winter.
UW-Extension will run five winter classes at Zion Lutheran Church and will start a new class at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Shawano. In Bonduel, St. Paul’s Lutheran Church will host a class, as will St. Francis Solanus in Gresham.
Registration is open for classes that start the week of Jan. 5 and run 12 weeks, through March 26. Strong Bones participants attend classes for an hour, two times a week.
At Zion Lutheran Church, classes will be offered at 8:30 a.m. Monday and Wednesday, 2:30 p.m. Monday and Thursday, and 7:30 a.m. Tuesday and Thursday. Advanced classes will meet at 8:30 a.m. Monday and Wednesday, and 7:30 a.m. Tuesday and Thursday.
Class at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Bonduel will be held at 7:30 a.m. Monday and Friday. The classes at St. Francis in Gresham will be held at 5:15 p.m. Monday and Thursday.
The new class at Sacred Heart will meet at 3:45 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday.
A Strong Bones class also will be offered at Total Fitness in Shawano at noon Monday and Wednesday and 5:30 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday.
The Strong Bones Program was developed by Dr. Miriam Nelson and Dr. Rebecca Sequin at Tufts University in Massachusetts. It includes progressive weight training, flexibility and balance activities. The exercises are safe and effective for both men and women of all ages, including those who are not in perfect health.
People with health concerns such as arthritis, heart disease, osteoporosis, diabetes, obesity and back pain often benefit the most from an exercise program.
The class will use dumbbells, ankle weights and exercise mats. Participants are urged to wear comfortable shoes and clothing.
All of the local instructors have received training with the Strong Bones Program.
The cost of the program is $25. Preregistration is encouraged, but participants also may register at the first class. For registration or information, call 715-526-6136 or email Kara.skarlupka@co.shawano.wi.us.
UW-Extension also is looking to expand classes to the Wittenberg-Birnamwood, Tigerton, Bowler, Mattoon and Cecil areas. If you have a group of 15 and a space available, call the UW-Extension office or email Kara Skarlupka.
