Dedicated senior citizens, friends of the fair and two outstanding family farms were recognized Sunday at the Shawano County Fair Awards Program.
Dedicated Senior Citizens honored this year were Richard Kuepper, Lois Anderson and Sandy Wendorff.
Kuepper was nominated by the Shawano Rotary, of which he has been a member for 41 years. Kuepper has hosted a number of foreign exchange students through the Rotary, and given time and money to the many organizations the Rotary supports locally and internationally.
Anderson was nominated by the Red River Riders, where she has volunteered for many years.
“The Red River Riders are completely overwhelmed by all the ways she volunteers for our community,” said Megan Welk, this year’s Fairest of the Fair, who hosted the event.
Anderson worked in the field of medical radiology for 43 years; the last 12 at ThedaCare in Clintonville. She retired last fall.
Wendorff was nominated by 4-H and Home and Community Education (HCE). She has been involved in the Central District Wisconsin Bookworms, served as HCE program vice president, chaired the Cloverbuds for the fair, is on the Cloverbuds Key Committee and a member of the Super Saturday Cloverbuds and Patty Pumpkin program.
Wendorff was also honored this year as a Friend of the Fair.
“Sandy is a very dedicated fairgoer and has had a definite impact on our Shawano County Fair through the 4-H,” Welk said.
Other Friend of the Fair awards went to Yvonne Polzin and Alice Schneider.
Polzin was named for her various fair and Shawano Speedway duties.
“She is always in her window on Saturday nights and during the fair, selling admission tickets to either the races or fair events,” Welk said.
Schneider serves as the fair’s superintendent for Open Class Photography.
“Each year, Alice spends hours preparing the display area for the fair and many more preparing photos for judging and displaying,” Welk said.
Century Farm Awards — honoring farms that have been run by the same family for 100 years or more — went to Melvin and Kathy Froemming and the Troy Porter family.
