St. Paul has its first week of school now under its belt, and the second week is off to a great start, as well. With an enrollment of 228 students in preschool age 3 through eighth grade, St. Paul is the largest Lutheran Church Missouri Synod (LCMS) school in the North Wisconsin District. Our school’s mission is to nurture children and their families and to provide children with a comprehensive Christian education that will prepare them for life both now and for eternity. As our congregation celebrates its 150th anniversary this year, we are even more committed to providing a Christian education to the young in the Bonduel area, today and well into the future. September chapel offerings are helping to support The Lutheran Malaria Initiative. Every 45 seconds, a child in Africa dies from malaria. Through the Lutheran Malaria Initiative (LMI), LCMS Lutherans can help fight this disease. Local efforts have included a golf outing last month that raised $3,979 and a 5K run/walk in Shawano on Oct. 5. Student auditions have been completed and work has already begun for this year’s Grandparents Day musical, “Land of the Lost and Found.” Mark your calendars now to attend the free public performance at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 9 in the St. Paul gymnasium.
St. James Lutheran, Shawano
Another school year has started and it is going great. This year we are blessed to have 27 new kindergarten students and an additional 14 new students for a total of 154 students. How great is that!
We also have brought in three new teachers; Mrs. Siahaan, our second kindergarten teacher; Mr. Schumm, our sixth-grade homeroom teacher and 5-8 social studies teacher; and Mr. Benedict, our eighth-grade teacher, and 5-8 English and literature teacher. They are a great addition to our staff.
We hope that all you grandparents out there will put Oct. 23 down as the date for this year’s Grandparents Day. We hope to see you then. For now, blessings on your weekend and enjoy these last days of summer.
Wolf River Lutheran High School
The 2013-14 school year is off to a great start at Wolf River Lutheran High School. We are pleased to welcome Paul Duerr to head the WRLHS math and science department. Duerr is a graduate of California State University–Stanislaus, and his students enjoy how he infuses his classes with precise instruction and well-timed humor. All other WRLHS staff members have returned to serve another year: Principal Jay Lindsey, theology and technology; Jennifer Blake, English, speech and drama; Brent Schultz, social sciences and business; Jacqueline Andrada, French and Spanish; Dave Pelow, music; and Steve Lehrke, athletic director.
The WRLHS Spanish 2 class has been studying cultural perspectives on family and celebrations in the Spanish-speaking world. They have also been discussing the artwork of Carmen Lomas Garza, who is best known for her paintings that show Mexican American family life in her native South Texas in the 1950s. Today the class made “papel picado” or cut paper decorations, which are depicted in Garza’s painting “Barbacoa para cumpleaños (Birthday Party Barbecue).” Mexican families frequently decorate for celebrations by using papel picado, made by folding and cutting layers of colored tissue paper to create designs or scenes that are then hung as decorations.
Wolf River Lutheran High School is pleased to announce that the Concordia University-Wisconsin Youth Ministry team will come to WRLHS Sept. 27-28 to host a lock-in for students in grades 7-12. Come join us for a fun overnight featuring devotions, games, activities, music, worship and food. This year’s theme is Cast Away!, reminding students to cast their cares on God. Bonduel Elementary
Every school year starts with an announcement that St. Martin’s Catholic Church in Cecil has donated school supplies again. They come with a big truck, loaded with tons of goodies for our students. Each classroom receives two new backpacks, packed with everything on that teacher’s supply list. In addition to that, there are tons of extra supplies in boxes waiting to find homes with the students of Bonduel Elementary. The teachers, as well as the students on the receiving end, are very appreciative of this wonderful gift from the members of St. Martin’s.
Welcome back to school 2013! Bonduel Elementary School is back in full swing after a great week back. This year we implemented many changes, such as online registration. This process made back-to-school a snap for parents with a quick online survey. The new registration process is also part of a school initiative to go green and use less paper. Our paperless initiative also means that report cards will be online-only for the first time. Teachers will update their grades regularly to make online reports available daily for parents as opposed to the previous four quarters a year. With the new and improved online communication, parents and teachers are feeling more prepared than ever for a successful school year.
Shawano Community Middle School
Students and staff started off the year last week with relationship-building activities, and information about expectations was shared. Overall, student enrollment is up in all grades.
A great week was had by all, with the emphasis on respect, responsibility and safety. We will have a welcome back party for staff and students Friday, based on individual student discipline referrals.
The English/reading teachers are implementing the Common Core State Standards across all three grade levels. The math teachers are continuing their implementation of the CCSS in all grade levels and adding more math time to the schedules of students by including two, 20-minute segments per week during the homeroom activities.

Gresham School
Sept. 4-6 was the first week of school, and Gresham School has had quite a few changes. Over the summer we had a new wood floor put in the gymnasium and added a computer lab within the library. Troy Kuhn said, “The library now has essential secondary education resources and technology that was previously missing. This is one step toward our technology goals for Gresham School District.”
On Saturday, the Gresham FFA held the Farm Heritage Day, which started with a tractor parade on Main Street, between The Woodland and Gresham Hardware store. Jeff Zobeck said, “The Farm Heritage Day was a huge success. This year we had a lot more tractors than the past years; it was a beautiful day.”
Olga Brener Intermediate School
Olga Brener Intermediate School kicked off our first day of school leading students on an Amazing Race to teach our Hawk Way expectations. Staff members taught students how to Be Respectful, Be Responsible and Be Safe in all areas of Brener School, including the hallways, on the bus, in the cafeteria, in the bathrooms and on the playground. Students found their way to each station by following clues on their Amazing Race and then enjoyed a treat in their classrooms to celebrate completing the “race.”
Throughout the school year, Brener students and staff will participate in Amazing Race challenges, and the class that best demonstrates the Hawk Way will win a traveling trophy for the month. Our hope is that students will have fun while learning to be successful here at school.
This summer, Olga Brener Intermediate School was one of 88 schools across the state to be named a School of Distinction by the Wisconsin Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) Network. This is Olga Brener’s second year as a PBIS School of Distinction. PBIS schools create more positive environments for students and staff by establishing clear expectations for students and taking active steps in teaching, modeling and reinforcing appropriate behaviors schoolwide. What a great way to kick-off the 2013-2014 school year!
Menominee Indian High School
Menominee welcomes back students and staff for the 2013-14 school year.
Menominee Indian High School was once again recognized for the being a PBIS School of Merit for the 2012-2013 school year. Menominee Indian High School started the year with a huge PBIS kickoff event on the first day of school.
The freshman academy began the day with orientation. All other students began their day at 11:30 a.m. with a cookout followed by a veterans ceremony.
Members of the Menominee Indian Veterans Association came to the school for a flag raising ceremony and to share some positive words with the students on succeeding academically and knowing their culture and history. Thank you, Menominee vets, for being here with us. After the veterans ceremony, honor roll awards were handed out and students were released to their individual o-time (adult mentors) coaches. Team-building activities and getting-to-know-you activities were done in their groups followed by activities outside by the track.
As part of the kickoff, each student received a school backpack that included basic supplies.
Here are some tips to continuing being a successful student:
• Make sure you are getting enough sleep every night.
• Write due dates down on a calendar or in your iPad.
• Eat a good breakfast at home or at school.
• Check with your teachers at the end of each class to make sure you understand your homework.
• Have an awesome year!
