Sanford K. “Butch” Hoffman, 76, Shawano, formerly of Gresham, began his Eternal journey returning to his Father in Heaven on Friday, Sept. 12, 2014, after a brief but terminal illness.
Born on Jan. 30, 1938, Herman Township, Shawano County, Sanford was the son of the late Alexander and Selma A. (Heins) Hoffman.
He was united in marriage to Carol M. Otto on Aug. 30, 1958. On Oct. 8, 1968, he and his family were sealed for time and all eternity in the Logan Utah Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. His dear wife, Carol, preceded him in death on Oct. 29, 1993.
Butch is survived by his five children, Kurt F. (Lori) Hoffman, Green Bay, Brett A. (Susan) Hoffman, Shawano, Heidi (Patrick) Pleshek, Gresham, Patrick (Diane) Hoffman, Shawano, Bonny Harding, Shawano. Sanford was the proud “Papa” to 29 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.
He is also survived by his sister, Evelyn Bohl; brothers, Clyde (Carol) Hoffman, Delbert (Kathleen) Hoffman and Dan (Sue) Hoffman, sisters-in-law, Shirley Hoffman, Iris (Jerrold) Bents, Diane (Edward) Sleger; brothers-in-law, Dale (Lisa) Otto, Tim (Sheila) Otto, Stan Otto and Bruce Otto. He was “Uncle Butch” to countless nieces and nephews. Butch will also be missed by a circle of very choice friends.
Butch was preceded in death by his parents; father- and mother-in- law, Harry and Mabel Otto; brothers, Omer and Glenn Hoffman; daughter-in-law, Tina Hoffman; brother-in-law, Alex Bohl; and sister-in-law, Clara Otto.
Butch was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He served in many capacities, including branch president of the Lyndhurst Branch from 1972-1978 and president of the Wausau District from 1982-1986. He was currently serving as Boy Scout committee chairman of Troop 3033 in the Shawano Ward. He was very generous with his time and resources in the furthering of his faith.
The Hoffman brothers are longtime owners and operators of Hoffman Transit Co. of Gresham. They also own Hoffman Wood Fiber in Tilleda. Butch was gainfully employed as president and CEO of the fiber plant for the past 30 years. He oversaw the development and was responsible for much of the growth and sustainability of the business.
Butch enjoyed traveling and spent many summers touring the country on his motorcycle. He especially enjoyed his trips to the West Coast and Rocky Mountain scenic areas in the U.S. and Canada. Another pastime was downhill skiing. He skied many of the renowned ski resorts in the Rockies and most of the ski resorts in the upper Midwest.
Butch will be remembered as a humble, loving and compassionate man who ministered to countless people. He has left a legacy of love and great example to his ever-growing posterity. There are no true endings, only everlasting beginnings.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, 2014, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Gresham with Bishop Newell Haffner officiating. Visitation will be held at the church from 4-8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 19, 2014, and again on Saturday from 9 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial will be in the Roosevelt Cemetery.
Swedberg Funeral Home in Shawano is assisting the family with the arrangements.
