A century of “Service Above Self,” the Rotary International motto, was recently celebrated by the Shawano Rotary Club.
Rotary is known for its local and international goals.
Locally, club projects have included improvement of Shawano recreation with projects at Kuckuk, Franklin and Sturgeon parks, along with support of school projects and student scholarships.
Internationally, the local club has helped eliminate polio, provide clean water and shelter to areas hit by natural disasters and actively support local physician Dick Stoughton during his years in Zimbabwe.
The club is currently led by President Cap Wallrich, a fourth generation of his family to be a member. His son, Aaron, served as president a couple years ago. The current treasurer is Paula Wegner, while the secretary is J.R. Habeck.
The club has provided three or four scholarships to graduating high school seniors for more than two decades. At least six of those recipients have become physicians, according to information provided by their families.
The current Rotary District governor, Julia Wallace, attended the local event held at the Curt and Martha Knoke home and urged the club to work on improving mental health resources in the area.
