The Shawano County Historical Society will hold its 17th annual Rhubarb Fest from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 21 at Heritage Park, 524 N. Franklin St., Shawano.
On this day, the main attraction is rhubarb. Participants will get to taste it in a variety of bake sale items, including pies, tortes, cakes, muffins, cookies and breads — all homemade by dedicated volunteers. To wash it down, there will be homemade rhubarb lemonade and sangria, Twigs Rhu-berry slushies, Hammen Family wine or a specially brewed rhubarb beer from Stubborn Brother’s Brewery. There will be other things to enjoy, including brats, hamburgers and even Culver’s custard served with a homemade rhubarb sauce.
Community members can put their baking skills to the test in the pie baking contest, explore seven distinct museum buildings and step back in time to experience the life of a fur trader. There will be expert artisans demonstrating basket making and wood carving, and the Civil War Reenactment by Company E, 2nd Wisconsin, will bring history to life. For the little ones, a special scavenger hunt will lead them on an exciting adventure through the museum buildings.
The historical society’s gift shop will have rhubarb cookbooks, rhubarb jam, fresh rhubarb and rhubarb wine. The Shawano Woman’s Club will hold a plant sale, offering a variety of perennials, including rhubarb plants, along with advice from master gardeners. Local vendors will showcase everything from maple syrup and handmade soaps to jewelry, wood and fabric crafts, plus original artwork.
There will be live music under a big tent, with The Burdocks performing from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., followed by the Scott Buettner Bluegrass Combo from 1-4 p.m. In the Old Tabor Church, Kurt Gunn will perform in the morning and John Rouk in the afternoon.
Admission is free, and free parking is available in the open lot behind Old Tabor Church and in the city parking lots on Washington Street and Second Street.
