At least one of two long-vacant businesses at the Oconto Falls northwest city limits is coming back to life.
Ben Holtger recently bought the former Mobil station and convenience store at 710 County Road B at a sheriff’s sale. He told the Oconto Falls City Council at its May 13 meeting that he’s been busy clearing up liens and judgments on the property.
“I’ve been working on cleaning up,” he said. “I hauled out a couple loads of junk tires, a couple 20-yard dumpsters of garbage, couple loads of scrap, mowed the lawn — just general cleanup, the place has been in pretty bad disrepair for a long time.”
The interior of the building needs some attention, too, he added.
“We’re making headway on it when I have time,” Holtger said.
The council declared the gas station, and a former Hardee’s restaurant at 782 N. Main St., as blighted property last year. City Administrator Peter Wills said he would refer a resolution removing the blight declaration from Holger’s property to the June meetings of the plan commission and city council.
Less progress has been visible at the old Hardee’s. After several promising reports about a food processing business moving in, Wills said he hasn’t had contact with the building’s new owner since February.
“He hasn’t been returning my calls,” he said.
Council members asked Wills to put the disposition of the North Main Street property to the June agendas, as well.
