Pre-summer observations

It feels a little like a jungle out there. With all of the rain we have been getting, the trees and underbrush have leafed out. I have been anxious to get the lawn mowed sometime this week, but it is hard to find a time when the raindrops aren’t falling and the grass isn’t wet. It seems strange that I haven’t mowed yet this year, but my kids have been taking turns at taking care of things while my arms and shoulders were so sore. Now, things seem to have eased up, and I want to take a try at it. The steering wheel of the old John Deere sometimes is hard to turn, so I will have to wait and see how things go. Meanwhile, strange things are appearing in my yard. First it was yellow flags and paint markings, and a couple of days later red flags and paint were added. I have no idea why this area is being flagged, but apparently someone is planning on digging somewhere. I know no one has asked for permission to dig here, nor do I have any plans to dig, so I will be watching for developments. It seems most of the bulbs and seeds that were planted a while back are sprouting, but there are some unexplainable empty areas. I can’t believe I didn’t distribute the zinnia and cosmo seeds better, but the corners of that flower bed need something. From the look of bulging greenhouses along the roadsides, I imagine I will be able to find something to plant in those empty spots. As I travel around the countryside, I notice that the corn fields are sprouting up nicely. Much of the first crop hay has been harvested. Somehow farmers find a way to get the work done. Now that some of my pain has passed, I am getting back into my exercise routine. This week, I spent one morning planting and working outside, then came in and rode the exercise bike. The next day, I exercised to a DVD. Today, it was back to Total Fitness and the cardio class. That is always fun for me, as I do enjoy working out with others. As I get older, I know how important it is for me to stay in fairly good shape in order to stay independent. Exercise also helps me keep my diabetes in control, along with diet. The diet part is always a challenge, especially this time of year. I can’t remember ever being a guest at so many graduation parties, plus confirmation, a baby shower and weddings. I believe they will be over by the end of the month. Meanwhile, it keeps weekends filled with friends and family. It has seemed like summer for a while now, but actually it begins on June 21. I never really believed that nature could read a calendar.
