An animal shelter in business for more than a year finally has a conditional use permit
The Shawano County Planning, Development and Zoning Committee approved the permit for Joy’s Place Animal Rescue in rural Gresham at its July 2 meeting.
Sarah Magee said she was under the impression from former county staff that a permit was not needed when she opened in the spring of 2024. She said she did a little more digging and found out she did indeed need a permit, so she applied for one this spring.
Animal rescue services will be limited to 50 cats and up to five dogs at any one time.
The Town of Herman approved the request in April. Magee’s conditional use permit expires May 29, 2028.
“We would like to operate an animal rescue to serve the Shawano County area,” Magee wrote in her permit application. “The Shawano County Humane Society no longer accepts stray cats or helps community members get them fixed. We want to serve the needs of the community and help control pet overpopulation. In our first year of operation, we helped over 300 cats. This is a significant number of animals in need.
“In addition to rehabilitating and rehoming cats, we help community members get their cats fixed at a reduced rate. We schedule, organize and transport 600-700 cats per year for this service from Shawano County.”
The animal rescue business, located at N6750 County Road A, Gresham, will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.
