The Oconto Falls High School boys track and field team took seventh and the girls finished ninth at the Bay Conference meet Saturday in Denmark.
Oconto Falls boys coach Lon Ludemann said he was hoping his team could get closer to fifth place.
Junior Mike Friedman had two of the top finishes for the Panthers. He took third in the 3,200-meter run and fourth in the 1,600.
“He finished above what he was seeded in both of them,” Ludemann said.
Ludemann said he was also impressed with Aaron Kurth’s eighth-place finish in the long jump.
“He’s a freshman,” Ludemann said. “He almost went 19 feet.”
The day started for the boys with the 4x800 relay team of Hunter Reed, Alex Young, Michael Fifield and James Malcheski, who put in their best performance of the season. The squad shaved significant time off their previous best to take fifth place, but that effort might have hindered the team’s prospects.
“They ran what they’re capable of, but I think it took a lot out of them,” Ludemann said. “Then it affected them in the events that I thought we were going to do the best in.”
A busy Bailey Wolf finished third in the 800, fourth in the 1,600 and fifth in the 3,200 for the OFHS girls.
“We asked Bailey to do something that was nontraditional, running in the 1,600, the 800 and then the 3,200,” coach Tammy Moynihan said. “She went out there trying to help the team and gave it a very fine effort. We’re proud of her performance.”
In the pole vault, Meghan Vandenack finished third.
“She’s been dealing with a back injury all of this season,” Moynihan said. “For her to go out there and vault 8-foot-6, when she sat out of practices and meets because of her back, we were very proud of that effort.”
The 4x100 relay team of Kali Erickson, Carolyn Malcheski, Liza Leja and Evy O’Harrow took third.
Carly Lemke placed fourth in the high jump.
The girls’ ninth-place finish as a team was just a couple of points behind Shawano and Denmark.
“I know that the team was disappointed with the place,” Moynihan said. “I can definitely say that they went out and gave it their best shot.”
The Panthers were missing Vanessa Van Den Elzen, who was a state qualifier in the hurdles last year, due to injury.
Seymour won both the boys and girls meets.
