Honors and accolades – and some good ribbing – flowed throughout a festive night in November when Wittenberg Fire Department’s Richard “Dick” Olsen was celebrated for 62 years of service.
Olsen was joined by members of the village of Wittenberg, Town of Wittenberg, Wittenberg Fire Department, family and friends.
After a catered meal and celebratory cake, Olsen was presented with an engraved golden axe.
Fire department staff recognized Olsen for his dedication, sacrifice and humility.
“Today, we celebrated over 60 years of service for one of our own,” the department posted on its Facebook page. “His knowledge, history, stories and patience (are) still brought to our meeting tables today. We cherish every moment he shares with us. We thank Dicky Olsen for his many years of service, and we thank his family for allowing him to serve the greater Wittenberg service area.”
Those in attendance shared stories about Olsen – one of the secrets for Olsen being the first to respond to fire calls was that he laid out his clothes and fire boots every night. Olsen also shared the fastest route to the fire station as he was often the first to the station when there was a call.
Also in attendance were men who served as fire chief during Olsen’s tenure: Dave Paisar, Paul Yaeger, Dave Owens and current Chief James Sterk.
