OFHS girls take top spot at invitational

The Oconto Falls High School girls captured the 64th annual Oconto Falls Invitational on Thursday despite injuries to two key performers. Sophomore Bailey Wolf won two events as the Panthers overcame the harsh weather and stiff competition at Memorial Field, winning the title by 4.5 points over Hilbert. The Oconto Falls boys finished fourth in their half of the meet, won by Kewaunee. “We were so happy to get the meet in,” Oconto Falls coach Tammy Moynihan said. “My team is battling through some injuries.” Oconto Falls was without juniors Julie Moore, who suffered a concussion, and state qualifier Vanessa VanDenElzen, who injured her knee earlier in the week. Moynihan’s adjustments included making Wolf a last-minute addition to the 3,200-meter run, which she won. She added a first-place finish in the 1,600-run and a second in the 800-meter run. “It is not traditional to put someone in all three runs in a meet,” Moynihan said. “We were not expecting it out of her.” Moynihan credited two other girls for stepping up and achieving personal bests in their events. Diane Moore captured a fourth-place finish in the 300-meter hurdles, and Carolyn Malcheski placed second in the triple jump. Meanwhile, boys coach Lon Ludeman said his team, competing in only its second outdoor meet of the season, also was affected by the weather. Junior Michael Fifield achieved a personal best in the 800-meter run, however, beating his prior record by six seconds with a time of 2:13.6. “He is becoming a good runner and is a hard worker and gives me his best every time he is out there,” Ludeman said. Fifield also notched second-place finishes in the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs with times of 4:51.42 and 10:30.32, respectively. Senior Alex Young took two top-five finishes in the invitational: second in the 400-meter dash and fifth in the 200-meter dash. Girls Team scores: 1. Oconto Falls 106, 2. Hilbert 101.50, 3.
