Gresham/Bowler Invite
Gresham/Bowler and Menominee Nation found themselves in identical situations at the Gresham/Bowler Invite.
Both teams defeated Faith Christian (Wausau) 2-1 but then lost 2-0 to Shiocton.
Marshfield Invite
Shawano won four of its five matches at the Marshfield Invite.
The Hawks opened play with a 2-1 win over Abbotsford.
That was followed by 2-0 victories over Antigo, Ladysmith and Mondovi.
The only came at the hands of their host, Marshfield, as Shawano was beat 2-0.
Oconto Falls 3, Waupaca 2
Oconto Falls made it a thrilling conference opener as they came from behind to beat Waupaca 3-2.
Oconto Falls dropped their first 2 sets, 25-21, 25-21. That did not discourage them as the Panthers did a reverse sweep and won the next 3three sets 25-17, 25-20, 15-11.
“I was very proud of the girls for how they fought all night,” coach Rochell Otto said. “It is not easy to be down 0-2, but the girls stayed locked in and kept fighting. It was a great character building match.”
Izzy Otto ran the offense with 40 assists. She also had four serving aces with two of those aces being at the start of the fifth set five-point run.
Amber Otto had her first double double, with 20 kills and 17 digs. She also was a threat at the service line with five aces.
Lucy Ripley also dominated in the front row with 19 kills.
Rylie Shallow led the defense with 24 digs.
Hailyn St. Louis added 11 digs.
Ella Jahnke had three blocks including a momentum changing block in the fifth set to help propel the Panthers to a 15-11 win.
Katelyn Kurek played a key role at the service line.
Marathon 3, Wittenberg-Birnamwood 1
Wittenberg-Birnamwood’s overall mark stands at 8-4 after a 3-1 dual loss to Marathon.
The Chargers were defeated 25-22, 25-13 before wining the third set 25-21. However, Marathon won the fourth set 25-15 for the match victory.
“We had a very up and down night,” coach Becky New said. “Our effort and enthusiasm was great, and we had a magnificent night blocking by racking up 12. However, we dug ourselves some pretty big holes at the beginning of sets. Most of the time we recovered and climbed back into the match to make it competitive but not enough to win the set. If we can eliminate some of those mistakes and play a little more consistently, we will have a great season ahead of us.”
Kaitlin Tuskowski led Wittenberg-Birnamwood with 15 serving attempts with two aces and four assists.
Makayla Meronk had six serving attempts with two aces as well as 12 digs. Kendyl Kessen chipped in with 11 serving attempts with two aces of her own.
Brie Ladika notched 20 serving attempts with one ace, and Evelyn Fletcher had 13 serving attempts with one ace, as well as 23 hitting attempts with five kills.
Melaina Granquist recorded 34 hitting attempts with seven kills, and 10 block kills.
Lily Metropulos contributed with 11 assists and 13 digs.
Sept. 5
Bonduel 3, Laona/Wabeno 1
Bonduel’s volleyball team defeated a Division 4-ranked Laona/Wabeno in four thrilling sets.
Bonduel took the first set 25-15, lost the second set 24-26 and then rallied back to win the third and fourth sets 25-23 and 25-19.
Bonduel was led by Audrey Weier with 19 kills, 12 digs and three blocks and Juliana Jacobs with 13 kills and seven blocks.
Other strong contributors were Paige Niquette with 23 assists and Jayla Reinke with 15 assists. Josie Anvelink led the team in digs with 18.
Gresham 3, Bowler 0
Gresham topped Bowler in three straight sets at home 25-18, 25-22, 25-15.
Stats leaders for Gresham were Lexi Baddmoccosin-Barnes with six kills, 13 assists and seven service points; Rylie Kakwitch with seven kills, 11 digs and 15 service points; and Janay Pecore-Kirkland with seven service points and six kills.
Gresham improved to 1-1 in conference play at 2-2 overall.
Tigerton 3, White Lake 0
Tigerton defeated White Lake in a Central Wisconsin Conference North match winning three straight sets with scores of 25-13, 25-12 and 25-20.
Tallying digs were Sienna Breaker with 14, Jade Selle with 10, Aaliyah Lederhaus with eight, and Angel Welch and Danika Tiller with six each.
Tiller led the Tigers with 16 assists.
Presley Stewart-Rolfs set the pace with 10 kills, followed by Selle with eight, and Tiller, Lillian Welch and Lederhaus with thee each.
Stewart-Rolfs and Lederhaus each had one block kill.
Angel Welch tallied 11 service points and two aces. Breaker had nine and an ace, Stewart-Rolfs notched eight service points and three aces, Lederhaus had seven service points and three aces, and Selle notched six with three aces.
Tigerton improved to 2-0 in conference action and 5-2 overall.
