For 29 years the Shawano and Waupaca counties’ Association for Family and Community Education have hosted a Fall Learn-In.
This year’s event will be held Wednesday at The Main Event, 206 N. Lemke St., in Cecil.
“It’s open to the entire public,” said Nancy Schultz, Shawano County family living educator and coordinator of the event.
The day begins at 8:30 a.m. with registration. At 9:35 a.m. Marti Matyska will show slides of the rise and fall of the hankie. Vintage hankies will be on display, and visitors are welcome to bring their own hankies to share their stories.
“I meet the neatest people just doing this,” Matyska said. “I’m from the hankie generation. I find them very interesting. When I meet people they have stories about hankies. There’s something about a hankie that reminds people of their grandma or aunts.”
At 10:45 a.m., Capt. Tom Tuma of the Shawano County Sheriff’s Department will discuss drugs and controlled substances. Questions will be taken about the growing drug culture in this area.
“It’s going to be interesting,“ said Sandy Wendorff, a member of HCE and the learn-in committee. She wanted to learn more about them, and Tuma told her that people will be surprised how prevalent drugs are in our county.
From 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m., lunch will be served by Sally’s Catering. The menu includes a hot sandwich buffet, salad, veggies and dip, cheese, desserts, coffee and milk.
Schultz will present a program entitled “Strong Women-Strong Bones” at 12:45 p.m. People will learn about the program and do some basic exercises. Two cans of soup, which will be donated to the food pantry, can be brought to use as weights.
Jason Roe of Orthopedic Spine Therapy of Shawano will present “Staying Upright” beginning at 1 p.m. He will be sharing information about preventing falls and taking balance training to keep from getting injured.
The day concludes with Mad Dog & Merrill educating the audience on the fine points of grilling. They will have cookbooks and other items for sale along with samples to taste from 2-3 p.m.
“It’s a fun day of visiting with other people,” said Helen Raddant, HCE president.
The cost of $18 includes lunch and supplies.
Crafts will be on display but not for sale.
Other members of the learn-in committee are Carol Sybeldon and Marion Voelz.
