Headlines scream “crisis,” but is Whitewater, Wisconsin, drowning in an immigration flood? Not quite. While a recent influx of new residents, primarily from Nicaragua and Venezuela, has drawn local attention, labeling it a “crisis” ignores the bigger picture and risks wasting precious resources. Firstly, let’s address the elephant in the room: Wisconsin’s overall immigration picture is actually shrinking.

It’s more than simple maintenance issues being reported at the Shawano County Courthouse. The latest problem was a leak above the county treasurer’s office. “It was actually a crack on a hub joint,” Steve Dreher, head of the county maintenance department, told the Shawano County Public Property Committee on Feb. 1.

The man accused of causing a homecoming bonfire to go horribly out of control pleaded no contest to all of the charges against him on Feb. 5. Samuel J. Armstrong, 18, has been charged with 13 felony counts of injury by negligent handling of explosives or fire when a diesel and gasoline mixture came in contact with the bonfire and the fire “began shooting out,” according to the criminal complaint. A sentencing hearing was scheduled for 1:30 p.m.

A 72-12 win over Xavier on Feb. 1 clinched the conference title for Shawano with a 6-0 mark. “I’m most proud of this group for stepping up and wrestling as a team,” coach Mike Homan said. “As we finished our conference season 6-0, I think back to all of the hard work that has been put into the practice room this season.

Lena’s losing skid stretched to nine with a 62-27 loss to Florence in non-conference action Feb. 3. Lena is 4-13 overall. Friday, Feb. 2 Bonduel The Bears sit at 11-0 in the Central Wisconsin East Conference after an 81-59 victory at Shiocton. Race Anvelink led the Bears with 34 points including nine 3-pointers. Noah Weier scored another 14 including a pair of triples.
