Pulaski golf team, Shawano golfer advance to sectionals

May 21 Division 1, Pulaski Regional Pulaski golfers placed third to advance to the sectional round, and one Shawano golfer will continue to compete as an individual following the regional round at Crystal Springs Golf Course in Seymour. Pulaski scored a 330; Shawano scored a 377 for seventh place. Scoring for the Red Raiders were Dixon Holewinski with a 78 (four-way tie for second best score), Connor Burant with an 81, Zachary Valeria with an 85

Panthers win in eighth inning
May 21 Oconto Falls 10, Sturgeon Bay 9 Oconto Falls scored five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning for a come-from-behind win over Sturgeon Bay in the last game of the regular season. Grayson Cahak had a one-out, two RBI game winning single. Cole Bozile hit 2-for-3 and scored two runs. Easton Engel was 2-for-4 while scoring once and getting three RBIs.

Wisconsin milk production up from a year ago
Milk production in Wisconsin during April 2024 totaled 2.72 billion pounds, up 2% from the previous April. That’s according to the latest USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service – Milk Production report. The average number of milk cows during April, at 1.27 million head, was 2,000 above last month and up 4,000 from April 2023.

State corn planting 2/3 complete
Wisconsin had 5.2 days suitable for fieldwork for the week ending May 19, 2024, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. Drier weather conditions throughout most of the week allowed the pace of planting progress to increase. Field activities included tilling, planting crops and cutting hay. Topsoil moisture condition rated 1% very short, 8% short, 74% adequate and 17% surplus.

Nicholas (Jake) Knoerzer
Nicholas (Jake) Knoerzer, 40, passed away peacefully on May 18 with his family by his side. Jake was born Aug. 21, 1983, in Oconto Falls. He attended St. Anthony’s Grade School and graduated from Oconto Falls High School, class of 2002. Jake enjoyed NASCAR, hunting, grilling and smoking food that he shared with family and friends, college football, sitting around the campfire and golfing with his best friends, Justin Schaal and Dustin Koebach.

Severson named top Legion member for Post 44
Henry Severson was named Legionnaire of the Year for American Legion Post 44. Severson is very active in the post as the membership officer and a member of the Honor Guard. Severson also coordinates the school flag essay contest by collecting, judging and presenting awards to the winners at the Veterans Day program at Wabeno High School. He was also the chairman of the Legion executive board. Severson also serves at veterans’ funerals.

WRLHS students win business challenge
The national Junior Achievement Titan Business Challenge Championship was won May 14 by Luke Hammond and Ryan Bohmback from Wolf River Lutheran High School. Hammond and Bohmback competed against 34 other high school teams from across the United States in the digital competition to see which team could run the most profitable virtual company. They will travel June 10 to the 2024 JA National Student Leadership Summit in Washington, D.C.

Bank First holding free shredding event
Bank First will be hosting a free shred event from 9 a.m. to noon June 1 at 835 E. Green Bay St., Shawano. While this shred event is free and open to the public, Bank First is requesting that participants bring a non-perishable food donation in exchange for each bag of personal documents shredded. All food donations will go to area food pantries. Shred events are an opportunity to protect identities while giving back to the community.
