GIRLS VOLLEYBALL Chargers take CWC-8 title After losing two conference matches throughout the season, Wittenberg-Birnamwood went undefeated during the Central Wisconsin Conference-8 tournament on Saturday without dropping a set. The Chargers (21-10, 8-2 CWC-8), who are on an 11-game win streak, handily defeated Weyauwega-Fremont in the opening match before taking previously undefeated Shiocton down, 26-24, 25-13.

The Shawano Community High School girls volleyball team looked like it was on pace to roll to a smooth four-set victory over host West De Pere on Tuesday night to clinch third place in the Bay Conference. Leading 16-10 in the fourth game, the Hawks then lost control of the match, leading to a 25-20, 20-25, 25-21, 25-17, 15-11 defeat. “The momentum kept shifting back and forth,” SCHS head coach Jessica Cumberland said.

Felony OWI A Wittenberg man is facing a felony charge of fifth-offense operating while intoxicated after his arrest Sunday in the town of Belle Plaine. Randy L. Hiles, 57, could face a maximum six years in prison and $10,000 fine if found guilty.

Yogi Berra died on Sept. 22 at age 90. Yogi was a great baseball player and a great manager/coach. As a player, coach or manager, Yogi appeared in 21 World Series and won 13 of them. He played for the Yankees for 19 seasons and the Mets for two. After his playing days were over, he managed the Yankees two different times (in 1964 and 1984 and ’85), and he coached for the Yankees, the Mets and the Astros.

The gospel trio Three Bridges will perform at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 16, at Riverview Alliance Church, 628 N. Main St., Oconto Falls. Doors will open at 6 p.m. Three Bridges’ music is rooted in traditional “southern gospel” and “black gospel” music.

Eberhart Steinbuck, 82, of Mountain, passed away on Oct. 9, 2015, at Sharpe Care Nursing Home in Oconto Falls. He was born Sept. 2, 1933, and grew up in Evanston, Illinois. He joined the United States Navy during the Korean War and served on the submarine U.S.S. Picuda. After serving his country, he returned to Evanston and joined the Evanston Police Force.

Hildegard (Karstedt) Severson, 91, ended her journey in life on Oct.

Matthew Marvin Curtis Samsa was born Nov. 10, 1992, and died unexpectedly on Oct. 10, 2015, in a kayaking accident in Marinette. He was the youngest of five children of Michael and Sharon Samsa (Abrams). Although his time on this earth was short, Matt lived his life to the fullest. He loved adventure, sports, the great outdoors, and most of all his family and friends.
