Turning the calendar page to November last Sunday came as a bit of a shock. Where did the year go? We are winding down to the end of this year. However, there are some big events that will come first, such as Thanksgiving at the end of this month. Deer hunters are busy staking out their perfect spot and getting everything ready. They are looking for that perfect buck.

The deer forage on our land, taking advantage of a virtual smorgasbord of fresh feed at their disposal. My husband enjoys hunting the deer that feed on our fields and looks forward to it all year long.

The Shawano County Arts Council provides entertainment in all forms throughout Shawano County and surrounding area. This fall, they have implemented two new events — a second art and craft fair and a new Christmas program. The Merry Mielke Christmas Craft Fair will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov.

Marshal Giese is president of the Shawano County Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 206. He is a lifelong resident of Shawano County and graduated from Gresham High School. Giese worked at Moede Plumbing as an apprentice before enlisting into the Army. He served from 1966 to 1969, serving in Germany and Belgium before spending a year in Vietnam in the demilitarized zone with the 108th Artillery Unit.

Ah, November, the month of Thanksgiving, Black Friday, deer hunting and the first-ever Merry Mielke Christmas Craft Fair at the Mielke Arts Center! This new event, on Saturday, Nov. 14, will host 25 vendors displaying a variety of art, crafts and other interesting items to help you with your Christmas shopping. Santa will be there, too, and kids can have their photos taken with him.

Shawano Community High School students have been invited by Elefson-Zeuske American Legion Post 117 to compete in the annual National High School Oratorical Contest. The subject in the prepared oration portion of the contest must be about some phase of the Constitution, emphasizing the duties and obligations of a citizen in the United States government. The oration must be an original effort of eight to 10 minutes.

The Menominee Nation was one of eight winners of the 2015 RWJF Culture of Health Prize recently awarded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. The prize celebrated the strides communities have made to ensure good health for their residents. Menominee Nation will receive a cash prize of $25,000. The tribe was recognized for leveraging its unique strengths and rallying community partners around a shared vision of health.

To the editor: I would like to clarify several points in regard to the Clintonville utility rates. The Public Service Commission and only the Public Service Commission sets rates for the city of Clintonville. The Badger Power Marketing Authority bills both Clintonville and Shawano for electricity. The price is a cost per kilowatt-hour. It is one price for the entire city. It is not broken down down into residential, commercial or industrial.
