Shawano students hold successful food drive

Students at Olga Brener Intermediate School collected hundreds of food items during their December Traveling Trophy Challenge. Each month, the school’s students compete against each other in a challenge with a winner declared at each grade level. The winning classroom gets to display the trophy for a month, and students receive an extra recess while the teacher receives an extra break. December’s challenge is always a food drive.

Man dies in apparent overdose at Menominee Tribal Detention Center
One man died of an apparent overdose the night of Dec. 23 at the Menominee Tribal Detention Center. Authorities were called to the detention center for an apparent overdose. On arrival, authorities found three male inmates appearing to be overdosing on an unknown substance. Authorities administered Narcan to all three victims. Two of the victims quickly regained consciousness.

Deloris B. DeBuhr
Deloris B. DeBuhr, age 102, of Embarrass, formerly of Gresham, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2023, at The Pines Post Acute & Memory Care, Embarrass. Deloris Bernice DeBuhr was born July 20, 1921, in Howards Grove, daughter to the late Gustav and Viola (Brumsted) Walk. After graduating from Howards Grove High School in 1938, Deloris was united in marriage to Donald DeBuhr on Sept. 1, 1938, in Iowa.

Ruth Ann Jeffrey
Ruth Ann Jeffrey, age 76, of Suring, formerly of Mountain, passed away on Friday, Dec. 22, 2023. She was born in Horton, Kansas, on Oct. 20, 1947, to the late Wilbur C. and Nellie E. (Tyler) Monhollon. Ruth Ann graduated from Horton High School with the class of 1966. She attended NEKA Vo-Tech School in Atchison, Kansas, studying clerk typing. Ruth Ann married Robert Jeffrey on Feb. 14, 1981.
