There are plenty in Wisconsin who enjoy the outdoors, regardless of temperature or condition, but there is one with the Wittenberg-Birnamwood School District who makes sure that the next generation has all the knowledge they need to make the most out of being outside.

• Thomas John Blake, 58, Oconto, pleaded no contest Dec. 12 to possession of methamphetamine. Judge Jay Conley imposed and stayed a county jail sentence March 30, then placed him on one year of probation with conditions.

• Hannah E. Hoffman, 19, Madison, pleaded no contest March 30 to six counts of battery or threat to a judge, prosecution or law enforcement officer, three counts of felony bail jumping, and misdemeanor counts of resisting or obstructing an officer, battery and disorderly conduct. Judge Suzanne O’Neill withheld sentencing and placed her on four years of probation with conditions.

Deputies responded to 21 incidents, including assisting at a grass fire on East Railroad Street in Bowler; fireworks near Curt Black Road and Fox Lane in the Town of Wescott; two 911 calls; three reckless driving incidents; one traffic hazard.

Fans are expected to pack the stands at the Shawano Speedway on April 18 for the opening night at the legendary half-mile track. The original opening night of April 11 was cancelled due to wet track conditions.

Gates open at 4 p.m. with races getting underway at 6 p.m.

Pulaski’s girls track and field team score 74 points and placed second at the Midwest Indoor Championship, hosted by UW-River Falls on April 4.

The boys team tallied 62 points and placed third. There were 16 teams competing in the meet.

Emerson Fabry won the 1,600-meter run in 5:22.26. Maggie Gerth finished second.

Gerth won the 3,200-meter run in 11:15.10.

Olivia Sprangers also won the long jump at 16-1.50.

Newcap, a northeast Wisconsin anti-poverty nonprofit group, abruptly closed its doors for good March 31 amid serious financial challenges, leaving thousands of people wondering what’s next for them.

For more than 50 years, Newcap has operated in 10 counties, including Shawano, Menominee and Oconto. It serves low-income residents and is funded primarily through state and federal grants.

Shawano Area Matthew 25, Inc. is once again bringing color and community spirit to Shawano with its annual spring flower sale fundraiser, open now through April 30. Orders must be received by 3 p.m. April 30 to be included in this year’s sale.

Flowers will be available for pickup May 21, from 3:30 p.m.-5:30 p.m. at the parking lot on East Elizabeth Street in Shawano, across from the Little League diamonds.
