Newcap hopes to expand housing options

Plans are in the works to convert a 28-room resort motel into housing for low- to moderate-income (LMI) people, but local officials are opposed to the change. Newcap Inc., which provides a myriad of services and programs for those in need, wants to remodel the White Pines Lodge, N9117 Big Lake Road, Town of Red Springs, into apartments for LMI residents. Suzanne M. Miller
Suzanne M. Miller, 82, of Shawano, passed away peacefully at her home on Wednesday, May 15, 2024. Suzanne was born Feb. 6, 1942, in Shawano, a daughter of the late Melvin and Florence (Martzke) Hoffman. She attended the Shawano schools, graduating with the class of 1960. Following high school, she moved to Illinois and worked at an insurance company. In 1961, she married Richard Koeller, and together they had two children, Mike and Greg Koeller.

Weight room, new orchestra pit make cut
Shawano School Board members favored remodeling space for a weight room as opposed to a building addition at the high school and opted to continue to push for a permanent orchestra pit in a remodeled performing arts center. Those were the two key decisions made during a June 19 work session as members continue to hone the referendum request to put before voters in November.

Shiner shares story of becoming transgender
Jamie Shiner was born male, but she always knew inside that she was female. Shiner, on June 19 at the Shawano Civic Center, told her story of the lifelong effort to shed her male designation and become who she feels she was meant to be.

Shawano hires new public works director
A new public works director will be coming on board for Shawano in July after the Shawano Common Council chose from three finalists at the end of May. Mike Mahloch, currently the utilities superintendent for the village of Bellevue, was selected to be the public works director.

Shawano School Board commits to middle school
Members of the Shawano School Board reached a consensus June 19 and committed the district to not abandon Shawano Community Middle School for at least the next decade. Instead, the board agreed an immediate investment in critical maintenance is needed to preserve the structural integrity of the school.

ARPA fund requests for county tabled
Three requests to use federal funds for courthouse and sheriff’s department projects have been tabled for a month, a decision made June 19 by the Shawano County Executive Committee. “We have a jail project that was a CIP (capital improvement project) that came in way over budget as you recall,” said Jim Davel, administrative coordinator. “The original estimate was $1.2 million.

New ad hoc building committee moves forward
Shawano County officials will once again work toward a long-range building plan, with members of the county’s executive committee reaching a consensus on the idea at their June 19 meeting. Man threatens deputies with explosives
A portion of state Highway 29 was shut down overnight June 20 as law enforcement negotiated with a man who threatened them with explosives and other devices, the Shawano County Sheriff’s Department reported. According to a statement from the sheriff’s department, at about 12:30 a.m., a caller reported a man with a truck and camper that appeared to be disabled on the side of the highway.
