While relating a fascinating piece of family history, my father told me the decision to emigrate to America began taking shape for my ancestors John George Holzschuh and his wife, Anna Maria, in 1850. As they contemplated the prospective trip, one burning question demanded an answer. America was a huge place — wild, unfamiliar, fearsome. If they did go, where would they settle? The whole village weighed in on their deliberations.

The Wisconsin 4-H Foundation awarded Amber Seitz, of Krakow, a $1,000 Oscar G. and Mary M. Woelfel Memorial Scholarship. Seitz has been active in her 4-H Club in Oconto County for 10 years. Her projects are focused on livestock and agriculture, showing swine, sheep and dairy cows at the county fair and state fair.

Lorraine Irene (Hoefs) Gentz, age 99, passed away Friday morning, June 28, 2024, at Serenity Gardens, Gillett. She was born Jan. 7, 1925, to the late Harold (Harry) and Irene (Pitt) Hoefs at Zachow. She graduated from Shawano High School in 1943. On June 14, 1944, she married the love of her life, Morton Gentz at Zion Lutheran Church, Zachow. She was employed by Pauly Cheese Co. in Zachow.
