An Oconto woman died Feb. 2 when she lost control of her car and rear-ended a snowplow on U.S. Highway 41 south of Oconto. The Wisconsin State Patrol said Sarah M. Yedynak, 26, was killed in the crash, which occurred at about 8 a.m. in the southbound lane of Highway 41 near Frog Pond Road. Yedynak was driving a 2012 Cadillac CTS when she apparently lost control of the vehicle on the slippery road.

Local farmers hoping to learn something new about the soil beneath their feet no longer have to travel across the state for the information. Shawano County officials are bringing the information closer to home. “There are a lot of different organizations offering events like field days where they talk about soil health,” said Bill Koepke, Shawano County conservation agronomist.

Milk production in Wisconsin during December totaled 2.69 billion pounds, up slightly from the previous December according to the latest USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service – Milk Production report. The average number of milk cows during December, at 1.27 million head, was 1,000 below the previous month and down 5,000 from December 2023.

Jordan Feemster, of De Pere, pleaded not guilty Jan. 31 to charges of attempted first-degree intentional homicide, battery, criminal damage to property and first-degree recklessly endangering safety by the use of a dangerous weapon in Shawano County. The arraignment followed a request by Feemster to get a different judge earlier in January. The case had originally been before Shawano-Menominee County Circuit Court Judge William Kussel Jr.

Work on renovating the Shawano Recreation Center is moving full speed ahead, but city officials are warning that once the actual construction and renovation work begins, patrons will need to temporarily exercise somewhere else. “Right now, we’re very heavily into the design component,” said Matt Hendricks, park and recreation director. “Typically, on larger projects like this, you have a quite a bit of time.

As Shawano County continues to struggle with its revenues and expenses to provide required services, one of the options that could be considered is the merging of departments. In combining similar departments, staff and services could be shared, thus reducing some expenses. The Oconto County Youth Fair Board is pleased to announce that applications for the 2025 Fairest of the Fair or Fair Ambassador are now available. The board is looking for residents of Oconto County who are interested in serving as representatives for the 2025 fair. Through the competition, either a Fairest of the Fair or a Fair Ambassador (female or male representative) plus an attendant (first runner-up) will be named.

Pulaski High School students will soon perform this year’s musical, “Once Upon a Mattress.” The show is a “comic retelling of the children’s story ‘The Princess and the Pea,’” said Amy Tubbs, drama director. “Queen Aggravain wants to find the perfect princess for her son, Prince Dauntless, but everyone fails the tests that she and the Wizard create. The King has been cursed and is unable to speak, communicating only in pantomime.
