County won't tap capital project reserve fund

Plans to use $500,000 of county sales tax money for capital projects are likely dead. The Shawano County Finance Committee decided earlier this week not to take action on a request by the Administrative Committee to revise the ordinance on the county sales tax to reduce or eliminate the amount of money placed in reserve for capital projects. The $500,000 can only be used in emergencies. Supervisors on the committee were reluctant to make changes

Wausau company is panel's pick for radios
Shawano County could save more than $17,000 if the lowest bid for the Sheriff’s Department radio replacement plan pans out. Task force considers multi-use plan for SMC site
Wherever it ends up being located, a boutique supper club and lodging facility on the waterfront would be a key component of the plan, task force members agreed. Most area schools receive passing grade from state
It’s only the third week of classes for public schools, but report cards are already out. Locally, every district but two met the standards determined by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction. The Menominee Indian and Bowler school districts fell into Meets Few Expectations, the category below Meets Expectations, which is considered passing. This is the first year that school districts are getting grades.

Lorraine Rose Splitgerber
Lorraine Rose Splitgerber, 89, of Shawano, passed away on Tuesday morning, Sept. 17, 2013, at her home. Lorraine was born June 22, 1924, in the town of Waukechon, Shawano County, a daughter of the late August and Laura (Bluemke) Rusch. Lorraine attended the Shawano schools. On March 22 1941, she was united in marriage to Robert J. Splitgerber at St. James Lutheran Church of Shawano. The couple made their home in Shawano following their marriage.

Evidence facility groundwork proposed
The Shawano County Finance Committee does not want to spend $715,000 on an evidence storage facility. The committee on Monday put a proposal to build the facility on hold. It also took no action on approving foundation work for the facility because there were no estimates of the costs. However, it is likely the Finance Committee will meet prior to the County Board meeting on Sept.

Cumberland named Shawano superintendent
The Shawano School Board unanimously named Gary Cumberland as the district’s new superintendent Monday night and accepted another administrator’s resignation.
