First Presbyterian Church in Shawano has been the site of the monthly Community Dinners since December 2010.
“They’re going really well,” said Angie Wilber, who was instrumental in starting them.
Wilber brought the idea to the Rev. Susan Phillips of First Presbyterian Church, who told her to proceed. The dinners have grown since then with churches and organizations now on board to help cook and finance the dinners.
St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Keshena, Hope Community Church in Shawano and First Presbyterian Church in Shawano have participated since the beginning.
Peace United Church of Christ, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Shawano Medical Center and the Master Gardeners have also helped regularly.
“I tell people if you want to do it come and check it out,” Wilber said.
About 75 people show up for the meal, which is available for anybody who wants to socialize, have a nice meal or help the community. Wilber is always hoping more people take advantage of the dinner.
“It’s for somebody who just wants to come and have a meal,” Wilber said. “I’ve heard people have gotten jobs after they met somebody.”
Several businesses and people have contributed to the success of the dinners. Radco has donated food containers for leftovers that go to the Eagle’s Nest in Neopit. Swedberg Funeral Home donated place mats. Angie Bistoff of Angie’s Main Café has donated soups and containers.
“She’s been a huge help,” Wilber said.
Bult’s Bakery and the Shawano Area Food Center have been regular contributors.
Wilber said Donna Thomas has helped to make the dinners happen, particularly when Wilber isn’t available. Peggy Garefino has volunteered to help with publicity.
“I didn’t even know there was such a thing going on,” Garefino said. “It’s a good time for people to get together.”
Garefino has taken brochures around town to attract more people. She brought her mother to the meal.
“It was so nice for her to socialize,” Garefino said.
The dinners might by made by the group or sometimes they get food from a restaurant or store and bring in the side dishes.
“People enjoy helping because it’s a good feeling,” Wilber said.
The meal is free but donations are accepted. That money is turned over to the Shawano Clergy Association, which will then help pay for a dinner if necessary.
The next dinner is at 5:30 p.m. July 23. It is sponsored by Zion Lutheran Church in Shawano.
In August, First Presbyterian Church will be the sponsor, followed by the Shawano Woman’s Club in September, Sacred Heart Catholic Church in October and the Wolf River Master Gardeners in November. The December dinner is still open, but Wilber said it seems to get taken care of with a holiday spirit.
“It’s worked out every year so far,” Wilber said.
