This past week’s World Of Outlaws Late Model Series visit to the Shawano Speedway was a feast for those who hunger for speed.
Twenty-six of the 33 late models on hand qualified at less than twenty seconds.
Fast qualifier Rick Eckert timed in at 18.883 seconds around the historic half mile to set a new standard for the fastest lap at the track.
In 2012 Tim Fuller turned a lap time of 20.151 seconds as the night’s fast qualifier. The 2011 fast qualifier, Steve Francis, turned a best lap of 19.284 seconds. While in 2010 fast qualifier Billy Moyer toured the facility at 19.630 seconds.
Six drivers this year were less than 19 seconds in qualifying. An incredible 16 drivers on Tuesday night beat the old track record. That is only one shy of half the field beating the old track record.
Kudos go to Bobby Reiter Sr. and Jr. along with race director Dale Hodkiewicz, who did a great job preparing a wonderful racing surface.
Mother nature also proved to be a race fan this year by keeping the skies overcast which helped to keep moisture in the race track. After the race numerous drivers talked about how racey the track was. It stayed smooth all night and had many racing grooves to run in.
Anytime a track puts on a show like last Tuesday’s race it is a definite gamble. A series like the World Of Outlaws commands a high purse in the neighborhood of $50,000. To make a race like this a success the track needs to get the track right to attract the racers and put on a good show for the fans.
Tuesday’s event did just that.
The lap times were impressive and 28-year-old Pennsylvania driver Gregg Satterlee picked up his first ever World Of Outlaws feature victory.
IMCA Stock Car pilot Brandon Czarapata scored his 10th win at the track in 2013 and brought home the $1,000 prize to go with it.
All in all I would say that the race was a success again and one to look forward to next summer.
