This past week I took Saturday night off from the Shawano Speedway and left the announcing duties to Cole Daebler.
I still got my racing fix this week by heading to the GSR Kartway just west of Clintonville on U.S. Highway 45. The GSR Kartway has been a stalwart in the world of dirt track go-karting for a number of years.
Shawano Speedway frontrunners Brett Swedberg, Marcus Yarie, Joe Reuter, Cody Grosskreutz, Dan Michonski, Nate Michonski, Jason Jach, Lucas Lamberies, Jordan Bartz, Brandon Nygaard, Wyatt Block, and Austin Carter all honed their racing skills on the 1/8-mile oval.
Other dirt racing hot shoes like Josh Long, Brandon Long, Kyle Lentz, Hunter Parsons, Johnny Whitman and TJ Smith were once weekly racers at the track.
Current pavement racers have also competed at the track. Racers like Ross Kenseth (yes he’s Matt Kenseth’s son), Ty Majeski, Sawyer Effertz, Tanner Bohlen, Randall Wilhorn, Brandon Reichenberger and Wyatt Blashe.
There is a strong core of racers competing nowadays at the track also. Tomorrow’s racing stars are competing today at tracks like the GSR Kartway, Hi-Go Raceway in Cecil and the Ringle Brickyard Speedway.
Look for names like Conner Wilinski, Lewis Jepson and Kyle Raddant in the future.
Go-kart racers start as young four-year-olds in the Kiddie Kart division. It is amazing to watch kids a young as four or five years old showing the ability to counter steer through corners.
There is no maximum age of competitors though the field of karts is mostly made up of young kids and teenagers. Go-kart racing is also a great family building sport as many families are involved in the sport.
Ed Bertram at the GSR Kartway and Mike Mitchell at the Hi-Go Raceway have built a strong tradition of racing in northeast Wisconsin.
If you are a racing fan it is worth your while to seek out one of these tracks and enjoy some good young racing talent.
