August is the month that signals the slide of summer into fall, as much as I hate to admit it.
Two of our children got married in this month, as did my brother and his bride of 46 years. I looked at my anniversary gift listing, which notes every single year, and for 46 years it notes “an original poetry tribute.” So I guess I’ll have to compose a fitting tribute, which I’m sure my brother will find “original”! Our kids’ anniversary years are 21 and 17, which doesn’t seem possible, and the list notes “brass & nickel” and “furniture & watch,” respectively. We usually give them just a little something to mark the occasion. Mmm, this may require some thought.
Speaking of kids, our first Mielke Theatre Children’s Workshop takes place from Aug. 12-17 and we have a good number registered already. The fee is $10 for the week, but we have scholarships available. Sessions will be from 6-8:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, with a kids’ version of “Peter Pan” performed at 2 p.m. Saturday. This show is open to all.
I’m sure the kids will have fun with Joe Engels and Megan Lisowe, directors of the workshop. Joe and Megan come from the Attic Theatre in Appleton, with lots of experience. Tom Webster, director of “On Golden Pond,” is in the middle of auditions as I write this. I attended the first audition as an observer and there were some excellent candidates auditioning that night. I’m sure he and assistant director Will Church will be able to select an outstanding cast when the auditions are over. I will report the cast list next month.
Finally, I want to send out an invitation to my readers to be a part of The Box in the Wood Theatre Guild and all the fun and creativity that goes with putting on our shows. We would love to welcome new volunteers in all aspects of our productions. We need people as directors, assistant directors, tech crew, costume and set designers, ushers, box office workers, etc.
We have our election of president and secretary in November. I’ve been president of the guild for several terms now, and it’s time for a change. Of course you can’t walk in off the street and be president, but being active in our guild for one year will make you an eligible candidate. We have current members now that I hope will step up and take the reins. Our secretary’s position will also be up for election.
