Fair time is the best time of the year

The Shawano County Fair is in full swing. Cream puffs are being eaten, as well as corn dogs and all of the other fair food. As a child I most remember the cotton candy and candy apples. Both were messy to eat, but I loved the cotton candy the best. By now all of the projects that were entered have been judged. I hope you take time to peruse each entry, whether made by a youth or entered in open class. All of them took a lot of planning and work to complete, whether they are animals who were fed and cared for these past months, or a woodworking project that was hammered and sanded and finished with care, or a dress sewed for a special occasion. It’s been many years since my kids were in 4-H, but I can remember all of the last-minute jobs that had to be done to finish off that special entry. The baking was always last-minute, and at times an ingredient was forgotten. The cake decorating was painstakingly worked on, and the results were never as perfect as my daughter would have liked. The vegetables were also looked over for weeks ahead of time, hoping for the right ones to bear their bounty at that optimum time — fair time. Tomatoes had to ripen, and match in size and color. The picking and preparing of them was another last-minute job to get finished. I remember days when my trunk was filled with decorated cakes, vegetables and woodworking. They jockeyed around back there on the trek to Shawano. At times there was rain, and the long walk, but somehow they all got there, and in place. Now my kids are grown, and my grandkids never got into entering items in the fair. I, however, have been entering photography for many years, and the past few, I have entered quilted items. Mainly the Shawano County Fair is something I look forward to every year. I enjoy watching the judging, helping out when asked, and getting to see old friends, and meeting new ones. It may be hot, or rainy, but I can’t imagine missing the fair. When farmer husband was alive, we would go to the stock car races. Now, I don’t go to the races, because I usually have overnight company that night. However, I have become a fan of the demolition derby. This weekend heralds the change of seasons, even though the official beginning of autumn doesn’t begin until next month. The kids will be back in school, the fall schedules will begin with football games, volleyball games and other sports. The farmers and gardeners will begin their harvests in earnest. At the fair we get to grab the last glimpse of summer. A lot of behind-the-scene work and planning go into the county fair each year. I personally want to thank everyone for doing their part to make the Shawano County Fair so GREAT!
