To the editor:
The city of Shawano, along with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, is now in the design state for the reconstruction of Airport Drive (state Highway 47/55) from state Highway 29 to East Green Bay Street.
Living and working in the local area, I see the Airport Drive and County Road B intersection becoming increasingly dangerous.
The intersection, I believe, needs serious control consideration.
Increasing traffic volume, minimal sight distance to the north and more truck traffic to adjacent industrial parks make the through and turning movements from County Road B challenging. Recently, a fatal crash occurred at the intersection.
Consider Shawano’s first roundabout there. Roundabouts have proved to smoothly control traffic and, most importantly, reduce serious injury and fatal crashes.
Growing up about a mile from this intersection, I don’t want my family members and neighborhood friends traveling through this dangerous intersection any longer.
Improvement cost vs. human life? Let’s strive for a corrective solution and save lives!
