t took five games, but the Menominee Indian High School volleyball team won its Central Wisconsin Conference-10 opener Tuesday in Gresham.
Gresham (0-1) won the second and fourth games, 25-13, 25-10, but Menominee Indian (1-0) took the first, third and tie-breaking fifth, 30-28, 25-22 and 15-12.
“I’m just proud of them, the way they played,” Menominee Indian coach Colette White said. “They were talking, hustling, moving and communicating. They played as a team.”
That first game ended after Menominee Indian scored two points off Taylor Mehkimetas serves to win it. The Wildcats had the biggest lead in that game, 18-14, before a Menominee Indian run tied it at 25-25.
“We beat ourselves up in the first game,” Gresham coach Tim Wild said. “We missed 11 serves. You can’t have that if you want to win the game. We came back and did very well in the second and then the third game was close. We just couldn’t get any consistently.”
Gresham served well in the second and fourth games, but struggled with serves in the three games it lost. The Wildcats built leads of 11-5 in the second game and 18-5 in the fourth game.
“In the second game, we made our serves,” Wild said. “When we kept the ball in play we were scoring points. That was the key to the whole night. We can’t be giving the other team points and expect to win.”
Sasha Peters led Menominee Indian with five kills. Mehkimetas finished with four kills, four digs and four aces. Linsay Nunwai had four digs.
Gresham was led by its two seniors. Brittny Andrews had 14 points. Tylena Bohl had 14 kills. Nanade Carroll had 21 assists, and River Otradovec scored 12 points.
