Bonduel High School’s Mallory Mews took second and Shawano Community High School’s Teagan Monfils was fifth at the Shawano Hawk Invitational cross-country meet Saturday at SCHS.
Twenty-six teams and 720 runners participated in the meet, won by the Green Bay East girls and Green Bay Preble boys.
Mews, with a time of 15 minutes, 37 seconds, finished second only to Winneconne’s Abi Salm (15:23).
“I felt really good,” Mews said. “It was just a perfect day for running.”
Monfils finished in 15:44, in a pack just behind Mews.
“Teagan, she’s going to be very competitive, she’s going to be up there,” Shawano coach Steve Stomberg said. “She knows what she’s got to do to if she wants to continue with the success that she had last year.”
Shawano finished 12th and Bonduel 14th in the girls meet.
Shawano finished sixth in the boys meet, led by Jake Klister (17:13), who finished 13th.
“He had another fantastic race,” Stomberg said, “and the other guys are coming along. They’re doing what we’re asking them to do.”
Bonduel finished eighth, led by Sam Falck (17:38), who was 21st.
Green Bay Preble’s Daniel LaLuzerne had the winning time of 16:11.
Stomberg said the crowd — he estimated it to be more than 2,000 people — and the weather made the event a success.
“It was a great day for running, I think everything went very well,” Stomberg said. “We received a lot of positive compliments for how we run our meet. We had a very good crowd of cross-country supporters, a lot of good competition. It was a lot of fun.”
