The Gresham Community High School volleyball team advanced in the WIAA Division 4 regional Tuesday night with a 3-2 win over White Lake in Gresham.
The third-seeded Wildcats were down to sixth-seeded White Lake 2-1 after losing the opening game 25-13, winning the second 25-9 and losing the third 25-23.
Gresham when on to win the fourth game 25-9 before edging White Lake 15-12 in the tie-breaker.
The Wildcats opened that last set down 3-0 before battling to a tie. It went back and forth from there until it was 10-10. Three points by Brianna Stehberger put Gresham in control down the stretch.
“We fought to win the last two,” Gresham coach Tim Wild said. “We did a much better job of keeping the ball in play as the night went on. We had a lot of unforced errors in the beginning.”
Wild said his team has become familiar with close matches.
“We’ve had a lot of close losses this year,” Wild said. “It felt good to come out on top of a close match.”
Nande Carroll had 18 assists, Lindsay Anderson had 10 kills, and Brittny Andrews had eight digs for the Wildcats.
“I give a lot of credit to our girls for fighting all the way to the end and pulling it out,” Wild said.
Gresham will face No. 2 Gillett in the regional semifinal on Thursday in Gillett.
