Shawano man facing sex assault, child enticement charges

A Shawano man is facing multiple felony charges related to the alleged sexual abuse of a child. Dick R. McKenna, 56, could face a maximum 40 years in prison and a $100,000 fine if convicted of repeated sexual assault of a child, and 25 years in prison and a $100,000 fine if found guilty of child enticement. He is also charged with felony counts of causing mental harm to a child, which carries a maximum 12 1/2 years and $25,000 fine, and physical abuse of a child, which carries a maximum six years and $10,000 fine. He also faces two misdemeanor counts of exposing his genitals to a child. The offenses allegedly took place between 2003 and 2007 when the child was between 3 and 7 years old, according to the criminal complaint. The alleged incidents came to light last month when the girl disclosed them to a counselor. McKenna was arrested Thursday after a joint investigation involving Shawano police and Shawano County sheriff’s investigators. Police Capt. Jeff Heffernon said authorities would be referring charges involving multiple victims. The criminal complaint lists only one alleged victim, but the Shawano-Menominee County district attorney’s office said there are plans to amend the complaint to add additional, unspecified charges. McKenna is being held on a $75,000 cash bond and is due back in court for an adjourned initial appearance on Monday.
