Two Shawano Middle School students are facing disciplinary action after plans for an underage drinking party were foiled last Friday.
School officials confiscated alcohol, including a bottle of vodka, from two female students, according to a Shawano County Sheriff’s Department report.
The report states that another student had invited a bunch of girls to an after-school drinking and smoking party.
Shawano police were called and the Sherif’s Department also got involved because the party was supposed to take place out in the county, according to Sheriff’s Department Capt. Tum Tuma.
Shawano Police Capt. Jeff Heffernon did not return a call for further information.
Middle school Principal Dan Labby referred questions to District Administrator Gary Cumberland.
Cumberland said police are still investigating the incident. He said it was his understanding that one of the girls invited to the party felt uncomfortable and alerted school staff.
Cumberland said he was aware of two students so far who are facing expulsion hearings in compliance with district policy.
“Anytime alcohol drugs or a weapon is involved, it goes to an automatic expulsion hearing,” he said.
Cumberland said there were “a number of students” who had apparently been invited to the party, but it was uncertain whether the police investigation would lead to any action against other students.
“We do what we can to discipline appropriately,” Cumberland said. “The students have to understand the seriousness of what they’re doing. I’m not sure they always do.”
