Days without practice and bad weather contributed to the sixth- and eighth-place finishes by the Bonduel High School boys and girls track teams, respectively, Thursday at the 64th annual Oconto Falls Invitational.
“A lot of our kids were at a three-day SkillsUSA (career training competition) event, so they went a couple days without sleep and some of their performances showed,” coach Jim Watry said. “They are tired; a couple of days with no sleep will do that to you.”
However, there were glimpses of promise amid the rain, including senior Hunter Berry, who won both the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs in the 10-team meet.
“Last year was his first year in track, and he has already broke 4.40 in the mile this year,” Watry said. “I am glad he came out because he is a great distance runner.”
Teammate Caleb Dowling, who finished sixth in the 200-meter dash, echoed Watry’s comments.
“He is an incredible runner and came out of nowhere last year and he has always run really well,” Dowling said.
Bonduel’s squadron of freshman girls also produced top-10 performances.
“The Sorenson twins and the Palmer twins are very talented and will continue to develop,” Watry said. “They are already standouts on the team.”
Freshman Anna Palmer captured fifth in the 400-meter run and seventh in the 800-meter run.
“To be honest, today’s races were my first races in the 400 and 800, so I did not know what to expect, but there is always room for improvement,” Palmer said.
Freshmen Ashlie Mastey and Hayley Sorenson teamed up with junior Whitney Banker and sophomore Clare Martell to produce a fifth-place finish in the 4x400-meter relay.
